Cointreau is a liqueur made from the peels of sweet and bitter oranges and belongs to the Triple Sec Curaçaos family. Cointreau is one of the most important and also one of the great classics of liqueur history.
The orange peels used for the Cointreau come from sweet and bitter oranges from Haiti, Brazil and Spain. The peels are mixed and soaked in alcohol for maceration. This is followed by distillation, during which the heated alcohol extracts the flavour from the orange peel. In the subsequent stages of production, sugar, water and neutral alcohol are used to produce Cointreau.
Cointreau is used in Cosmopolitan, Margarita and many other cocktails.
